Christmas 2007 Enjoy The Gift of The Moment A particularly hectic and challenging season in my ministry forced me to gift shop at the very last moment. Crowded malls, icy sidewalks and an extremely small budget brought extra frustration that I found hard to overcome. Arriving in my hometown after a four-hour ride on a crowded, overheated and noisy bus, I forced my way through the packed terminal, lugging my luggage behind me, weary to the bone. After a few anxious minutes of searching through the crowds, I met my ride. Battling through rush hour traffic, we barely arrived at my parents in time for a quick meal before changing for Christmas Eve services. Although we arrived early, the sanctuary was almost full. Fortunately, an usher squeezed us into a pew. I took a deep breath and willed myself to relax as the children's choir led us in carol singing. The familiar lyrics soothed my spirit and the creche at the front of the church drew my heart close to the greatest Gift of all. We walked into a magical fairyland as we left the church as a fresh blanket of light, glittering snow had fallen while we worshiped. Returning home, I wrapped a few last minute gifts and placed them under the tree. As I glanced out the window, I marveled at the beauty of the night. My sister echoed my sentiments as we bundled up in our coats, boots and mitts and headed out for a walk in our quiet neighbourhood. The snow was not yet packed and so it muffled our footsteps as we slowly strolled around the block. Soon, our conversation drifted away as we allowed ourselves to be immersed in the sweet stillness. The spirit of the beloved carol. "Silent Night, Holy Night - All is Calm, All is Bright." embraced me. There was no room in my heart for anything but contentment and thanksgiving. For that moment, the worries of work were behind me and the hectic busyness of tomorrow was in the distant future. I breathed in the gift of peace and that peace carried me. My prayer is that you seek out those moments of stillness, not only during this Christmas season but also in the year to come. In the midst of business, work, family and life's obligations, may you breathe in His peace and allow it to carry you through your days. With love, © 2007 Katherine Walden
